New Product Development.

Our award-winning team of product designers will walk you through the process
of turning your design idea in to a manufactured product – approved and ready for sale.

You’re likely to have questions such as what’s involved in developing a new product? What problem will my design idea solve? Who is my target user? Who can help manufacture my product after it’s been designed, and how many am I likely to sell in my first year?

New Product Development is the process of refining a design idea; ensuring that it is feasible; maximising its chances of success in the market. NPD is a critical component of innovation for your business, enabling you to meet changing market demands, remain competitive and service the needs of your customer.

We know that major success can only be achieved if project aims are clearly defined from the outset. If you partner with us, we will realise your product by following our trademarked Rapid Product Development (RPD) Pathway. Whereby, we will walk you through a series of stages and decision gates, so that together, we deliver the best outcome for your business.

By understanding your personal motivations and ambitions, we can support you in bringing your product to life. Our team of design specialists are experienced in working with both entrepreneurs and large organisations. Partner with us to ensure that your vision is translated into a product that not only meets your customers’ needs but also fulfils your personal aspirations.

Our Approach.

Our trademarked Rapid Product Development (RPD) Pathway is central to every project. Whether you want to work with us to design an award winning consumer product, or a game changing medical device – we will walk you through a series of stages so that we can achieve the best outcome for your business. Our design management approach ensures that your technical, commercial and financial risks are mitigated throughout the entire development journey.

1 - Foresight

We will determine the technical and commercial viability of your design idea at the start of your journey.

2 - Concept

Then, using digital sketching, we'll explore a variety of possibilities to establish the best design direction.

3 - Development

Our expert team will create your product in a virtual environment with specialist in-house 3D CAD software.

4 - Detail

Prototyping technologies will allow us to test your design - ensuring that it meets the needs of its users.

5 - Optimise

Final refinements will be made so that we can prepare the engineering data needed to manufacture your product.

6 - Verify

It may then be necessary to engage an external test house to verify that your product meets safety regulations.

7 - Handover

Finally, we'll provide access to our network of manufacturing partners to produce the product we have created.

Case Study.

A typical shower head comprises of multiple plastic and silicone parts that are often welded together; preventing them from being recycled at their end of life. MOHONTO is a sustainable shower head that is made from just three parts – an aluminium body, a faceplate and a circular seal. The shower head is supplied with a small tool that allows the user to remove the faceplate and replace it with a different pattern. Small changes in the number, size and angle of water holes mean that an endless variety of spray types can be experienced. This unique concept was conceived by the design team at ITERATE after spotting a gap in the market for an environmentally friendly shower head. MOHONTO was subsequently awarded a European Product Design Award in 2021.

Our Work.

We have achieved ISO 9001 & 13485 accreditation, enabling us to offer product design, research, development and
prototyping consultancy to private companies and public sector organisations in medical, consumer and industrial markets.

Customers & Partners.

“I highly recommend ITERATE, ultimate professionals who are very knowledgeable and efficient. Work undertaken has been innovative and they think outside the box to give you more scope and depth of knowledge. Another big plus is their excellent communication skills, an area most other businesses let themselves down. They are all very likeable, which is why I consider ITERATE to be the best design company I have worked with.”

FAQs.

What are the key stages of new product development (NPD)?

The key stages of new product development (NPD) are set out in ITERATE’s Rapid Product Development (RPD) Pathway;

  1. Foresight: Assessing the technical and commercial viability of the design idea.
  2. Concept: Using digital sketching to explore various design possibilities.
  3. Development: Creating the product in a virtual environment with 3D CAD software.
  4. Detail: Prototyping to test the design and ensure it meets user needs.
  5. Optimize: Refining the design and preparing engineering data for manufacturing.
  6. Verify: Engaging external test houses to ensure safety regulations compliance.
  7. Handover: Connecting with manufacturing partners to produce the final product

How long does it take to develop a new product?

The time required to develop a new product varies widely depending on its complexity, scope and industry. For example, an electro-mechanical medical device may take years to properly develop; whereas, a simple consumer product may only take a few months. Based on our past experience, we are always able to offer an estimated timeline. However, it’s important to recognise that whenever trying to create a new product, challenges will occur that will need to be overcome. This is why we believe it’s important to remain flexible and communicate regularly throughout the delivery of your project.

What are the common errors in new product development, and how can they be avoided?

Common errors in new product development include insufficient market research, misalignment with customer needs, scope creep, poor resource allocation and inadequate testing. We can help you avoid these by conducting comprehensive market analysis, actively involving customers in the development process, setting clear project scopes and milestones, allocating resources effectively and implementing rigorous testing protocols.

Additionally, with any client relationship we foster a culture of collaboration, embracing feedback and remaining adaptable, to change and mitigate risks. Regular evaluation and adjustment throughout the development cycle will ensure alignment with market demands, enhancing the likelihood of successful product launches.

How do you ensure a new product meets market needs?

To ensure a new product meets market needs, extensive market research is imperative. We start by identifying target demographics, analysing competitors and gathering feedback through surveys and focus groups. Utilise data analytics to refine features and optimise usability. Engage in continuous communication with potential customers, incorporating their preferences and addressing pain points. Stay agile, adapting to market shifts and consumer trends. Prioritise customer satisfaction, aiming for a seamless user experience. We regularly evaluate performance metrics post-launch, remaining receptive to feedback for ongoing product enhancement.

What is the cost of developing a new product?

Each project is delivered in a number of phases and a cost is attributed against each phase of work. The timeline of each of these phases is dependent on each individual project -they are all different! Some projects can be completed in a matter of weeks and other more complex products can take months. In addition to this, the costings of each project will differ depending to its complexity.

We request that 50% payment is made upfront and 50% payment is made on completion of each phase. Providing the work is paid for in full, you will own all intellectual property associated with a given phase of work. All design rights will automatically be transferred to you at the point of payment. If for whatever reason, you fail to pay for the work that has been undertaken, we reserve the right to retain all IP associated with your project.

Is there market demand for my product?

Determining market demand involves comprehensive research. Start by analysing industry trends, competitor offerings and consumer behaviour. Conduct surveys, interviews or focus groups to gauge interest and identify pain points your product addresses. Evaluate existing solutions and assess the uniqueness of your offering. Utilise data analytics to quantify potential demand and forecast market growth. Pilot testing or pre-orders can validate interest before full-scale production. Continuous market monitoring ensures alignment with evolving customer needs. Ultimately, market demand depends on factors like value proposition, pricing and marketing strategy. Adaptation based on feedback and trends enhances your product’s appeal and market fit.
