The Client
Wiredless was developed by the design team at ITERATE to demonstrate their product design & engineering capabilities. An internal ‘thought showering’ exercise led to the following product opportunity being identified: create a device that enables people to continue using their existing wired headphones. The headphone jack is rapidly disappearing from many smart devices forcing such auxiliary equipment to become redundant and ending up in landfill.
Design Challenge
A major challenge faced was identifying a method for housing the electronics and concealing the headphone cable. Through research into existing wireless headphones, it was found that many wireless devices feature a neckband to provide more volume for the electronics – rather than packaging them within the actual earbud/headphone. The decision to utilise a neckband design provided a housing to hold the electronics and cabling comfortably and conveniently.
“ITERATE provide a refreshing product design perspective and are ever conscious of pragmatic, efficient and intelligent design solutions” Richard Slade, Client Services Director at Brandrefinery
Our Solution
The neckband incorporates a Bluetooth module. This allows the user to plug their wired headphones into the receiver and conceal excess cabling around routing points within the neckband profile. The neckband also provides user-friendly media controls so that the user can change tracks and volume without needing to interact with their smart device.
Final Outcome
Designing a product for wired headphones may seem like a backward step in technology. However, it helps bring this technology up-to-date and inline with the current direction of smart devices. Wiredless also repurposes existing wired headphones, extending the life-time of these products and preventing them from ending up in a landfill.
