Designing for Spontaneity: The Role of Flexibility in Summer Gear

Summer has a way of inviting spontaneity. A sudden heatwave, an unexpected camping weekend or last-minute barbecue at the beach...

Warm, light evening’s is the season of “why not?” moments. However, behind these impromptu adventures is gear that enables it to happen! An array of products designed not just for function, but for flexibility.

Remember those old-school tents from years gone by? The ones with a maze of poles, pegs and numerous separate sheets? They took so long to pitch, they almost put you off going altogether. Today, with a TentBox, you can camp on your car roof and it pops up in 60 seconds!

Product designers are recognising flexibility as becoming an increasingly popular desire, alongside usability, durability and purpose.

This is particularly the case in the context of spontaneous use. Consumers increasingly value gear that supports a “drop everything and go” lifestyle. The products that thrive are those that are compact, light and adapt easily.

Fold It, Pack It, Go

Take foldable bikes, for instance. Once a niche commuter solution for taking on and off the train, now embraced by van-lifers and rural explorers. Their design prioritises compactness and transition, folding down to suitcase size while still providing full-scale functionality on the move. The latest models integrate lightweight materials, seamless locking mechanisms and even electric-assist motors.

Flat-pack firepits and BBQs, like those from Wolf & Grizzly are redefining outdoor cooking on the go. Designed to fold down to the size of a laptop, these ultra-portable firepits mean there’s no reason not to head off to the beach for the evening and eat a burger as the sun goes down.

Then my personal favourite, foldable trolleys are the heroes of spontaneous summer outings. These pack-flat carts are engineered for convenience and unfold in seconds. Hauling everything from beach gear and coolers to kids and camping supplies. With robust wheels designed to handle sand, grass or gravel, they make transporting heavy loads to remote picnic spots or shorelines effortless. The best part, they collapse neatly into the boot of your car taking up minimal space.

Designing for the In-Between Moments

As society moves into a summer that demands more flexible working and impulsive adventures, the demand for gear matching these behaviours is only growing. USB power banks, roll-up footwear, inflatable loungers, sand-free beach mats… You name it, it’s being thought of.

Brands that embrace this mindset, focusing on compactness and adaptability, will find themselves packed into bags and heading off into the sun. We as designers at ITERATE are ahead of the curve on this one.

Is there something you are looking to bring to market but feel unsure of the path ahead? We can assist you. Maybe it’s just a conversation, possibly a product evaluation to assess the curve balls?

Whatever it is that’s holding you back, just remember this; People are becoming more spontaneous and if you don’t act, someone else will…
