Why Great Product Ideas Fail Long Before Manufacturing

When a new product fails, it's easy to blame manufacturing. In our experience, that's rarely where the problem starts.

Most products fail much earlier, during the decisions that shape the entire project.

One of the biggest reasons is a lack of validation.

Founders naturally become passionate about their ideas, but enthusiasm isn’t the same as evidence. Before investing in development, it’s vital to understand whether customers genuinely need the solution and whether they’ll pay for it.

Another common mistake is spending too much, too soon.

Early product development should be about learning, not committing. Every prototype, feasibility study and design review should reduce uncertainty before larger investments are made.

We also see projects where design becomes focused on appearance rather than purpose.

Good product design balances usability, engineering, manufacturing, compliance and commercial objectives. If one of those is overlooked, problems often emerge much later when they’re significantly more expensive to solve.

Perhaps the greatest value an experienced consultancy brings is perspective.

Sometimes the most important contribution isn’t suggesting a new feature. It’s asking a difficult question that nobody else has considered.

Could this be simpler?

Is there a better route to market?

Are we solving the right problem?

These conversations rarely make headlines, but they often determine whether a product succeeds.

What We Do Differently…

At ITERATE, we believe innovation is a series of informed decisions rather than a single moment of inspiration. The earlier those decisions are tested and challenged, the greater the chance of commercial success.

We pride ourselves on asking questions and talking about your concept, long before it becomes a product.

If you’re ready to move your idea forward, start with the questions that matter most.
