Every week someone contacts ITERATE with an exciting product idea.
Some become successful commercial products.
Others never make it beyond the first conversation.
The difference is rarely creativity. More often, it’s the decisions made before any design work begins.
After helping innovators develop products across consumer, medical and industrial sectors, we’ve learnt that the biggest risks usually exist long before CAD models or prototypes. They exist in the assumptions.
The first mistake is falling in love with the solution instead of the problem.
It’s easy to imagine the product you’ve invented. It’s much harder to ask whether the problem is significant enough for people to pay to solve.
That’s why one of the first questions we ask is deceptively simple:
What problem are we really solving?
If the answer isn’t clear, the design won’t be either.
The second mistake is assuming you’re the market.
Many great products begin with a personal frustration, but your experience isn’t evidence. Who else has this problem? How often? What alternatives do they already use? Understanding the market before development starts can save months of redesign and thousands of pounds.
The third mistake is treating the prototype as the destination.
A prototype isn’t proof of success. It’s a learning tool. Sometimes the best outcome is discovering that an assumption was wrong before you’ve invested in tooling or manufacturing. That’s not failure. It’s progress.
Finally, many founders think design starts with drawing.
It doesn’t.
Professional product development starts by reducing uncertainty. Manufacturing, regulation, intellectual property, commercial viability and customer value all influence the product long before the first concept is created.
At ITERATE, that’s why we spend as much time asking questions as we do designing solutions. Better questions lead to better decisions, and better decisions create better products.
If you’re considering developing a new product, start with the decisions that matter most.
