Pole was developed by the design team at ITERATE to demonstrate their full range of engineering capabilities. An internal idea generation exercise led to this product opportunity being identified. This project aimed to explore how the effectiveness of solar powered mobile phone chargers could be improved.
Existing solar based chargers need to be compact so they can be easily transported. However, their size also affects their overall performance and ability to power a phone. The design challenge faced was being able to develop a solution that was not only compact but could harness sunlight better than any other solar charger on the market.

A swivel mechanism located in the centre of the product allows a second solar panel to be exposed. This unique configuration enables Pole to be twice as effective as most other solar phone chargers currently available. The form of this product was inspired by the ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ symbols associated with battery polarity.
As well as featuring many patentable design elements, Pole includes a PVC suction cup that can be attached to a window, helping to optimise sunlight exposure. Power is stored on an internal low profile Lithium-ion battery, which can be seamlessly transferred to a phone using the integrated USB port.
