Scope
Reverse Engineering (RE) is a useful tool whereby a CAD model and/or engineering drawing is created from a manufactured part. In practice, there are many reasons why this would be required, such as: integration of an existing part within a wider product assembly; or original design data being mislaid. In a lot of cases, injection mould tools are modified without the changes being documented. This means that when new tooling is required, the latest CAD model does not reflect the most recent manufactured part.
Design Challenge
Through a series of accurate hand measurements, design data can be extracted and a replica CAD model created. Where necessary, parts can be physically dissected in order for internal detail to be obtained. Co-ordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) are capable of capturing highly accurate dimensions (e.g. 0.001mm), which enable critical fits and tight tolerances to be correctly stated. More recently, CT (Computed Tomography) scanners are being used to measure internal dimensions without destructing the part.

Our Solution
This case study demonstrates how a number of hair dryer attachments were produced using a combination or 3D CAD and rapid prototyping. Using Fuse Deposition Modelling (FDM) technology and blue ABS filament, a functional part was created that could withstand high temperatures. Furthermore, a Stereolithography (SLA) part was built that better reflected the surface finish of an injection-moulded component but did not possess the same temperature characteristics.
Final Outcome
Please contact us if you require support with reverse engineering of existing parts. This service is not limited to injection-moulded components; as we have extensive experience of working with cast, machined and sheet metal products. We regularly find that our approach is a more cost effective option when compared to 3D scanning, which is another way of obtaining highly accurate 3D CAD data.
