The Client
enModus is an exciting technology company who specialise in smart lighting and building energy management. They supply highly granular monitoring and control systems that can be retrofit within industrial, commercial and retail environments; encompassing embedded connectivity, cloud based platforms and user interfaces.
Design Challenge
The aim of this project was to develop a plastic moulded enclosure that was capable of safely housing the control electronics. The product is mains-powered and to meet the CE Mark requirements the enclosure must not be openable without the use of a tool. It was designed with a secure clip mechanism to avoid the additional cost and assembly time of screws.
“We relish the opportunity to work with clients operating in fast moving sectors, which allow us to demonstrate the benefits of our RPD Pathway” Gethin Roberts, Managing Director at ITERATE
Our Solution
The result of this project was the enModus Node, a two-piece enclosure manufactured from a UL approved fire retardant polymer. ITERATE worked very closely with the client and the manufacturer to produce ‘soft tooling’. This allowed an initial batch of 500 injection-moulded units to be rapidly produced with a limited amount of investment.
Final Outcome
Soft tooling is often produced from material such as aluminium that has a limited life-time. Due to the success and rapid growth of enModus, this mould is unlikely to be able to service future product demand. This is why the client is moving towards a high volume tooling and production strategy.
