The Client
Dinertech is a UK based start-up company who produce innovative technologies for the hotel and restaurant trade. Reculver is a ‘call for service’ light that is intended to enhance the dining experience by allowing users to discreetly gain the attention of their waiter or waitress in a busy environment.
Design Challenge
The top half of Reculver is produced from a mild steel tube with an 18mm internal diameter. The main challenge faced was being able to develop the control electronics and plastic enclosure within such a small area. A larger diameter tube could not be used as it negatively affected the product aesthetic and increased the overall unit cost.
“We chose to work with ITERATE who developed and prototyped our electronics, as well as designing a clever two-piece plastic enclosure for our product” David Harrington, Managing Director at Dinertech
Our Solution
The final design features an LED with an optical lens and a vertical load switch at the opposite end of the assembly. When the top is pressed by the user, the LED lights up and changes colour over a period of 5 minutes. The electronics are protected by a robust ‘self-locking’ plastic enclosure that also holds two AAA batteries in place.
Final Outcome
Using the latest production techniques, ITERATE manufactured a batch of 50 full working prototypes. Reculver was launched at the Northern Restaurant & Bar Show in 2015, which provided Dinertech with the opportunity to generate media interest and secure orders before proceeding to production tooling.
