Thomas Gray Completes Jobs Growth Wales Programme

The Jobs Growth Wales programme offers young people like me an opportunity to experience what life is like in the design industry. After the completion of my initial 6-month placement I can vouch that this programme not only works for the employee but the employer also. Whilst the employee gathers vital experience that will benefit them immensely from more experienced colleagues, the employer gains a member of staff that they are able to mould into their working environment. This placement has given me an invaluable insight to the industrial world of design and left me eager to learn more.

Can Open Innovation Shape the Future of the Welsh Economy?

The term ‘innovation’ gets thrown around constantly in modern day business; meaning different things to different people. However, in recent years, the term ‘Open Innovation’ has become more apparent; especially in the world of product development. Developed by Henry Chesbrough in the early 2000s, the concept highlights the worth of using outside sources of innovation to improve one’s own product or service; a theory that many 21st century businesses are now exploring. Utilising the help of people outside your own internal network can boast various benefits; a way to actively incorporate the wider community into your innovation management strategy.

We Hope You Have An Electric Christmas!

To celebrate a fantastic year (and for a bit of Christmas fun), we decided to demonstrate the benefits of conductive ink and how this could be integrated with 3D printed polymers. Conductive ink can be used to remove the need for wires in electronic assemblies, which can help reduce weight; cost of production; and reduce assembly time. Our simple Christmas tree illustrates how power from a 3V battery can be connected to a series of LEDs to achieve a consistent and reliable connection. Read more

Why You Should Consider The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS)

The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) is designed to help small, early-stage companies raise equity finance by offering tax reliefs to individual investors who purchase new shares in those companies. It complements the existing Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) which offers tax reliefs to investors in higher-risk small companies. SEIS is intended to recognise the particular difficulties which very early stage companies face in attracting investment, by offering tax relief at a higher rate. Read more

The Influence of Arduinos in New Product Development

Arduinos and similar microcontroller boards are having a huge impact on the way modern products are developed. The low cost and easy to use systems mean that designers and engineers are able to prototype and test ideas in a short period of time, allowing them to make design decisions based on rapid feedback.

By ‘hooking up’ simple electronic components, one is able to test: interfaces, interactions and record data; allowing designers to make changes and improve the quality of a final product. There are a number of ways Arduinos have accelerated the new product process, which are explored below:  Read more
